Having your dog at the photoshoot
If you have a pet, chances are they’re the center of your world. As a Florida photographer, I often encourage people to bring their dogs to their photo sessions. It makes perfect sense to include them in life’s big moments—they’re part of your family, after all! Having portraits with your pet is a beautiful way to capture that special bond. Here are a few tips for bringing your dog to a photo shoot:
Communicate. If your dog isn’t super friendly with strangers or other animals, just let your photographer know ahead of time. No one wants a surprise nip or a runaway pup!
Treats. Bring along some treats and water to help keep your dog happy, focused, and motivated during the session.
Props. Cute props like hats, signs, or outfits can be fun but aren’t necessary. My main goal is to capture the real connection between you and your pet. If you do want to use props, it’s best to do it early on—some pets get irritated quickly, so this is where treats come in handy!
Mix it up. I love doing a mix of posed and candid shots. Snuggle up for a family portrait, or bring your dog’s favorite toy or a cozy blanket to sit on together. Play, walk, or show off some tricks—these moments are often the most heartwarming and really show off your relationship.
Helper. For outdoor sessions, it’s super helpful to have someone come along to keep an eye on your dog when they’re not in the shot. Avoid tying them to a tree or post—this can make them anxious or pose a safety risk. If you’re indoors or can’t bring help, bring a kennel or crate they feel safe in for short breaks.
